Preparing for your Portrait Session
Children
Clothing with solid colors or tones work best. Colored clothing gives a fun look where black, white or grey looks more formal. If the child has a favorite dress up outfit feel free to bring it along, these can be some of the most fun, cutest shots. Clothing with logos or designs will distract from the star so are not recommended. With babies less clothing is better to capture those baby rolls.
If there will be outfit changes start off with the child in the preferred outfit to ensure we get plenty of photos in that outfit.
If you are being photographed with your child there's no need to match (unless you want) just make sure outfits coordinate.
The session will be relaxed and fun. We can take breaks for feeding or diaper changes.
Adult
What you choose to wear depends on the type of portrait.
If the portraits are for friends or family simple designs and solid colors or tones work best.
If the portraits are for business men should wear a dark color suit jacket. If a jacket isn't being worn a dress shirt other than white should be worn. For women a solid colored dress shirt with a simple neckline is best. Jewelry should be simple and kept to a minimum.
If the portraits are for fun let your imagination run wild. You can dress up in a period costume, in a cosplay outfit, or as your favorite superhero, serious or silly it's all up to you.
Maternity
When preparing for a maternity session there are a few things to keep in mind. Regardless of what you'll be wearing during the session you should wear loose clothes for a couple of hours before the session. This will avoid weird lines on your baby bump. Solid colors work best, black or white clothing can be especially nice. Avoid bright colors. Light and flowy material also works well. Shirts that open in the front are a good choice because it will make it easier to show off the belly. Tank tops are also a good choice. Black or dark colored yoga pants or jeans work well.
You may also want to use some props. If you have a small toy or gift for the baby you might want to bring it to be in some of the photos.
Promotional
For a modeling or acting headshots solid colors are best. Dark colors will bring more attention to your face. You may also want to select a color that brings out your eye color.
For band or music promotion you should dress in whatever you wear to perform in. Clothing without logos will put the focus on you.
For sport promotion you will want to wear your uniform. I also recommend having a second outfit, so I can capture the athlete and another side of you.
Group
For a group photo you don't need to match, but should try to coordinate so everyone looks good and doesn't clash.
Of course there are exceptions to every rule and I'm happy to bend them to fit your vision.
